1. General Information

Taiyuan University of Science and Technology (TYUST) established in 1952 is one of the earliest universities in the People¡¯s Republic of China for both education and research. It is situated on the west side of Fen River in Taiyuan, a historical cultural city of China. Having belonged to the National Mechanical Industry Department, the University is now under the administration of the Ministry of Education and Shanxi Province. After fifty years of development, it has become a multidisciplinary comprehensive university of Science, Engineering, Art, Administration, Law and Education.

2. History

The University, under the direct administration of the Ministry of Machinery Industry, was set up in 1952 and began to recruit undergraduates in 1953.

In 1981, it began to recruit master degree students and was one of the second batch of universities in China accredited to grant master degree.

In 1998, during the Management System Reform of Higher Education, the University became a higher education institution that was administrated by both the Central Ministries and Shanxi Province, and mainly by Shanxi Province.

In 2004, with the approval of Ministry of Education, the University changed its name into Taiyuan University of Science and Technology.

5. Faculty

Taiyuan University of Science and Technology has 826 teachers among whom there are 110 Professors, 115 Associate Professors, and 3 academicians (specially invited) from Chinese Academy of Engineering. 22 professors are entitled as experts with Government Allowances, 6 are honored as China Machinery Industry Sci-tech Experts, 10 teachers are selected as Cross-century Academic Leaders by the Machinery Industry Ministry. There are 15 Doctoral Degree tutors and 153 Master Degree tutors.

6. Students

Taiyuan University of Science and Technology recruits students from thirty provinces of the country, and has sent its graduates to work nation wide in the past fifty years. At present, there are 13770 students in the University, among which there are 9864 undergraduate students, 419 postgraduate students, 632  polytechnic students, 2862 adult education students.

The school has always been abiding school motto of "rigorous, united, realistic, advance courageously¡± to improve the quality of education. Stepping into the 21st century, Personnel training has kept pace with the situation of economic development and the trend of education reform. According to ¡°widen knowledge, thicken base, strengthen ability, improve quality¡±, we have deepened teaching reform, strengthened practice, updated teaching method, improved quality education gradually and have made substantial improvement in talent training. The graduates have been welcomed by the society and the employment rate at graduation has maintained above ninety-five percent in the last five years.

Students are supported and encouraged to join in all kinds of competitions in the country and society and got excellent achievements in The National University Student Electronic Design Competition, The National University Student Mathematics Modeling Match, The National University Student Foreign Language Contest, Philip's National University Student League Football Match etc.

8. Research Profile

Mechanical Design and Theory: We first put forward at home and abroad The Theory of Heavy Machinery Structure and Optimized Technology of Steel Rolling Mechanical Structure, The Technology of Improving Rolling Mill Bearing Life-span, Steel Tube Three Roller Piercing Mill Technology, Large-scale Steel Construction Analysis and Design Technique, and more. In China, we play an important roll in Metallurgy Machinery, Hoisting and Transportation Machinery, as well as Engineering Machinery. For most of the above fields we have independent intellectual property rights. We are allied and directorate unit of many Chinese profession academic societies and specialist committees.
 
8.1 Provincial Key Research Programs
 
 The machining of material: First put forward the new theory of compound material rupture and manufacturing technology of compound material, the new technology and theory about manufacturing of big forging, and have the top level in China Material Processing Discipline: We are the first one proposed The New Theory of Compound Material Breaking and The Technology of Compound Material Manufacture, New Craft and New Theory of Large Forging Manufacture, Accurate Simulation and Control Technology of the Metal Plasticity Forming, The Technology of New-type Liquid Pneumatic Hammer, The Technology of High Speed and Precisely Cutting etc. at home and abroad.
 
Vehicles Engineering: It is the first time at home and abroad that we propose The Vibration and Noise Reduction Technique of Machinery Engineering, The The vehicle engineering: We first put forward the technology of reducing shake and noise of engineering machinery, Bulldozer Chassis Design Technique and Car Loader Design Technique etc.and technology of loader design in the home and abroad. We have relationship with more than ten big group.
 
System Engineering : We have special feature in the theoretical research of Systematic engineering: We are specialized in Dynamic System Theory of Mixing, Evolve Computer and Complicated System Control Theory etc. and superiority in The Development of Information System and Computer Monitoring, The Application of Dispatch and Emulation System. We have won National Science Funds for many times and have also taken charge of some 863-projects and 973-projects.
 
Applied Mathematics: We have obvious characteristic and advantages in respect of Counting Theory of Combinatorial Mathematics and Systems Monitoring Study of Net Separation Events based on Petri. We have two research directions: The Theory of Differential Equation and Its Application; The Mathematics Problem in Systems and Control. They have won The National Natural Science Fund for many times.

*        Zhang Yong¡¯an, the Vice General Engineer of The West Heavy Machinery Institute, has won the National SciTech Process Award for three times;

*        Gu Cuiyun, from Taiyuan Heavy Machinery Design Institute, the Chief Designer for the Three Gorges¡¯ ¡°1,200 tons hoist cranes¡±, has won 2nd Class Prize for the National SciTech Process Award;
